Class Rank in College Admissions February 25 There is a great piece in todays The Daily Pennsylvanian about class rank in highly selective college admissions that we figured wed share with our readers. Many applicants to highly selective colleges get bogged down in worrying about their rank within their high schools graduating class. Well, theres an interesting article in The Daily Pennsylvanian, the newspaper of the University of Pennsylvania, by Caroline Simon that we figured wed discuss. In the  piece entitled Class rank is low on list of college admissions factors, the title says a whole lot, wouldnt you say? And it sure is true. Class rank is certainly not one of the most important factors in highly selective college admissionsand it hasnt been for years. The article quotes David Hawkins, the director of public policy and research at the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, an organization that our Founder, Bev Taylor, is a member of. As quoted by The Daily Pennsylvanian, David Hawkins says, We’ve noticed a pretty precipitous decline in the level of importance that colleges attribute to class rank.† And the always  tell-it-like-it-is dean of admissions at Penn, Eric Furda, confirmed NACACs conclusion that class rank is not an essential factor in the admissions process at the University of Pennsylvania. That says a whole lot. As the article quotes Eric, From a multidecade perspective, class rank has become less prevalent in secondary schools, he said, adding that only about 30 percent of Penn’s applicant pool typically attends a school that ranks its students. Class rank has become less prevalent in our pools, and therefore, less relevant, Furda said. Well said indeed. Many high schools across America and around the world choose not to rank their students, especially in todays age in which everybodys a winner! And rank is relative anyway. It all depends on the competitiveness of a high school. Ranking first at a non-competitive high school may not be as good as ranking eighth at one of the most competitive high schools in America. Huck also understands that being free means that he can live his own life, by his own rules, and not worry about how he looks, talks, or acts. Throughout history, society has dictated mans rights to how one must act, look, believe, do, etc. Huckleberry Finn lived in a society where the color of a persons skin determined the result of ones life. Jim, the Widows African American slave, joined Huck on his adventure to freedom. Jim has convinced Huck to help him in his reach the North. Huck realizes that Jim IS a human being; despite Jims ethnicity and social principles. At the end of the book, Aunt Sally questions Huck and Tom about why they would want to help free a slave. Huck simply replies, No, I aint out of my head; I know all what Im talking about. We did set him free me and Tom. We laid out to do it, and we done it. And we done it elegant, too. Assertively, Huck defends Jim against the remarks that Aunt Sally is making. Throughout history many civilizations and cultures have had their own ways of explaining the world and its creation. Each of these civilizations has created unique descriptions and accounts of such events. However, when comparing them to each other, are they really different? Look at the ancient Greco - Roman creation myths as told by Hesiod in his Theogony and Works and Days and Ovid’s Metamorphoses, when compared to the creation myths as seen in the Old Testament’s book of Genesis they may not be as different as one would think.
